Keeping cool in the face
of a Siberian challenge
March is the time of year when we often start thinking about our summer holidays. But instead of dreaming of sun, sea and sand, four DENSO specialists boarded a plane to a remote area at the edge of the Polar circle.
In 2013, JSC Transneft Moscow, the operator of one of the world's largest pipeline systems, invited manufacturers to West Siberia to put their products to the test. All of the well-known shrink sleeve manufacturers responded to the call. While our competitors developed specific products to cope with the extreme cold, our team presented DEKOTEC®-HTS70, the tried-and-tested standard product, along with its accompanying DEKOTEC®-EP Primer. The forecast for the test day predicted temperatures of -25°C — an enormous challenge. But our product had already proven its ability to withstand extreme climate conditions.
However, seeing the mercury drop to -38°C still sent shivers down the spines of our team on the ground. And the mood didn't improve when one by one, their watches, LCD displays and parts of the digital camera started to fail due to the cold. In an unheated tent, DEKOTEC®-HTS70 was shrink-fitted to a pipeline that had been preheated to around 55°C. To prevent the primer from crystallising as soon as it came into contact with the unrelenting cold, a camping stove was used to keep the primer warm.
Even though the conditions were a worst-case scenario, the quality of the corrosion prevention products was evident: The DEKOTEC® sleeve was fully fitted in an impressive 37 minutes. When the organiser inspected the results after 24 hours, an official verdict was made: Our product outperformed the competition in extreme conditions! The sleeve adhered perfectly at the connection point on the pipeline and at the transition to the factory-fitted corrosion prevention solution.
Proof that DENSO corrosion prevention can withstand even the coldest of climates!
